Fluorite Beads
Fluorite gets its name from the element Fluorine, for which it is mined, and/or Fluorescence
as this gemstone commonly fluoresces blue under UV light. Fluorite is a soft
(Hardness is 4 on the Moh's scale)
translucent to transparent gemstone. While it comes in many attractive and
interesting colors, it is most commonly purple.
Highly prized is the pink and blue varieties. It may be beautifully banded in white, green and purple. It has a
distinctive cubic crystal system (looks like a box) and cleavage--i.e. to breaks very distinctly
along certain planes when struck (cleaves into a pyramid shape). Fluorite's softness and
strong cleavage should be considered when using this gemstone in creating jewelry! In other
words, it's probably not suitable for jewelry items that take heavy wear (such
as bracelets or rings). (NOTE: All beads/stones
can be assumed to be about a Grade B and UNTREATED, unless otherwise specified)
